LEE Ashcroft’s Kendal Town looked to be well on the way to staging a major upset on Wednesday as they raced into an early lead over Premiership Sunderland and took a 4-2 lead into the half time break.
Lee Mulvaney opened the scoring for the home side after only five minutes, and while Swedish international Rade Prica pulled one back for Sunderland it was Town who dominated the first half, with player manager Lee Ashcroft retaining the lead for Kendal and a deflected Michael Cole free kick sending them into an 3-1 lead.
Things only got better for Town, as they continued to push forward, scoring a brilliant fourth with Alex Taylor finishing off a fine move. Sunderland got a goal back just before the break, but as the half-time whistle blew Kendal left the pitch to huge applause from their astonished fans.
However the second half was a different story entirely, the disjoined Sunderland team of the first half seemed to have re-grouped at half time and began to mount wave after wave of attack. The visitors struck a total of seven times after the break as the gulf in class began to show, despite Kendal’s valiant first-half performance it was Sunderland’s internationals who had the final say, in a 9-4 score line.
