N Lancs Football - Burrows' double strike rewards Cartmel

PREMIER Division sides in the Honda Lancaster North Lancashire League focused on cup action on Saturday.

Cartmel and District's 2-0 win over Galgate was the pick of the Adam and Gaskell Senior Challenge Cup programme.

In-form Galgate made it a real cup-tie thriller, with the action flowing from end to end, both sides creating chances and missing them.

Cartmel had Matthew Burrows to thank in the second-round match, as he scored both goals to earn a home meeting with the winners of the Bolton-le-Sands/Bentham/Overton tie.

Second Division Arnside did well against Premier opponents Ingleton, who are lying third in the table, and with any luck they could have pulled off a shock result They had more chances than Ingleton but just could not make the breakthrough. Instead, the Dales outfit snatched the win with a Jonathon Boadle goal.

Ingleton have another away tie in the third round to the winners of the Boys Club/Freehold game.

Swarthmoor Social Club took high-flying Highgrove into extra time as the sides were locked at 2-2 at the end of normal time. Graham Wilcox scored twice for Swarthmoor, while Scott King netted both of Highgrove's efforts.

Extra time could have gone either way but Luke Ogley supplied the decider to put Highgrove through into the next round.

Grange had drawn with Torrisholme 4-4 in a recent league game and met again in a first-round tie. Both sides gave their all but Grange proved stronger with a 3-2 victory thanks to goals from Steve Grundy, David Spendlove and Michael Purves, which sets up a second-round meeting with local rivals Allithwaite Rangers.

Torrisholme did enough to take the verdict to extra time with Tobi MacNeil bagging both goals for them.

In the Westmorland County FA Senior Cup, Kirkby Lonsdale's game against Lunesdale United turned out to be a farce.

The ten Kirkby players who took the field played poorly and never looked as though they could damage the Lunesdale side, who ran out 8-2 winners.

Kirkby's two goals came from Andy Metcalfe and Alex Taylor.

In Division One Cartmel Reserves moved off the bottom of the table on goal difference after gaining their first point of the season in a 2-2 draw against Boys Club.

Galgate replied with a Simon Gould goal in a scoreline that flattered the visitors.

Leaders Bolton-le-Sands are one of only two teams still with a 100 per cent record and had few problems in overcoming Swarthmoor Reserves 5-2 with goals from Curtis Ward, Tom Cragg, Mark Smith, Edward Best and Steven Metcalfe.

Swarthmoor's consolationgoals came from Sean Dixon and Jack Moore.

Allithwaite Rangers had to bow the knee to Division 3 leaders Halton Rangers Reserves, losing 6-3 with Ben Redmayne (2), Nathan Londoner (2), Harry Jacks and Richard McDonnell scoring for the winners.

Sands' Simon Bowen produced a 30-yard bullet shot that almost broke the net, but he had to be on the losing side after Carnforth replied with goals by Daryl Hayton and Robert Pearcy.

Burton Thistle moved into fifth after winning only their second game of the season so far, but having drawn five times. They outclassed Boys Club Reserves to win by 5-1 with Chris Plevey, Sol Jackson, young Matthew White and leading scorer Tom Forrest scoring twice.

John Norman scored a rare goal for the Boys Club, who remain without a win and lie third from bottom. The two bottom teams in Division 3, Grange Reserves and Arnside Reserves, both without a point so far, fought out a 2-2 draw.

Richard Lawrence and Kevin Thompson scored for Grange, while Arnside had Mark Smith on target and an own goal on the sheet.
