Football - Byrne denied a decider

Kendal Town 0,Worksop Town 0.

KENDAL were left frustrated as they failed to score through a mixture of poor finishing and resolute defending by the visitors to The Lakeland Radio Stadium last Saturday.

Kendal will doubtless feel they were robbed of all three points as a rare Paul Byrne 'goal' that came direct from a corner was disallowed on 64 minutes for an infringement that bewildered their supporters.

But even without the disallowed effort, Kendal should have sent the visitors home pointless after collecting all three points at Worksop the previous weekend.

Lee Ashcroft's men created a host of chances but failed to get the breakthrough as several glorious opportunities went begging. Rare breakouts by Worksop were comfortably dealt with by the defence.

Worksop keeper Steve Hernadez denied Carl Osman and Craig Hobson with great saves in the first half.

After the break, Alex Taylor and Michael Cole both went agonisingly close with efforts to give Kendal the lead.

A couple of great runs by Osman forced corners as Kendal pressed hard. From the second of these corners, Kendal had the ball in the net but the referee ruled out the goal for an infringement.

Even late in the game Kendal came close to wrapping up the points when Paul Byrne found the unmarked Tony Hallam at the back post but with time and space the substitute placed his header the wrong side of the post. It summed up a testing day for Kendal.

HOW THEY RATED: Newnes 7, Williams 7, Byrne 7, Wordsworth 7, Melling 8, (Hallam 70) 6, Warburton 7, Osman 7 (Standley) 6, Hobson 8, Taylor, 7, Cole 9, Mulvaney 7.

* Star man Michael Cole - always looked most likely to score.
