Orienteering: Braving a wintry test

ORIENTEERS braved Sunday's wintry weather at High Brow on the Ullswater Fells for West Cumberland OC's colour-coded event in the Cumbrian Galoppen series.

Lakeland OC juniors and Ulverston Victoria High School pupils took leading places in the 1.7km Yellow course with LOC's Kirsten Bell and Hannah Cleary-Jones finishing first and second followed by UVHS's Jack Rotherham, Lucy Seger and Fred Nicholls in third, fifth and eighth places. BARRO's Thomas Edmonds was 10th and Warrior OC's Kirsty and Hazel Laverack 14th and 15th On the 2.4km Orange course Natalie Beadle (LOC) was fourth, followed by Jonathan Crabbe (UVHS) 7th, Sean Penellum (BARRO) 9th, Tom Spencer (UVHS) 11th, Chloe Bell (UVHS) 12th, Matt Edge (LOC) 14th.

On 3.2 km Light Green course UVHS pupils finished as follows: Sam Jefferson 2nd, Meghan Hallat 4th, Malachy Buck 6th, Lydia Howard 10th, Andrew Benson 14th, Kate Douglas 23rd, Ben Hewson 25th Amelia Elliott 26th, LOC's Lindsay Harrod 7th. Fully technical navigation was required on remaining courses over a range of distances. On the 2.3km Short Green course, UVHS's Ellie Wharton and Rosie Emms were fifth and eighth with LOC's Kate Tiley 10th.

BARRO's Carl Edmonds and Matthew Penellum were first and second on the 4.2km Green course with Tom Adams (UVHS) 11th, Sid Smith (LOC) 14th, Beryl Offley (LOC) 15th, Dave Nield (LOC) 19th, Judy Burge (LOC) 21st, Zephan Buck (UVHS) 24th, Dave Binks (WAROC) 26th, Janet Nash (LOC) 27th, Carrie Beadle (LOC) 29th , Rachel Turner (LOC) 30th, Clive Leal (LOC) 33rd, Luke Douglas (UVHS) 34th, Richard Day (LOC) 38th, Anne Wilson (LOC) 42nd, Stan Johnston (LOC) 46th, Jack Filmore (LOC) 49th, Helen Neild (LOC) 54th, Ann Smith (LOC) 55th, Judith Filmore (LOC) 58th and Danielle Gabbert (UVHS) 59th.

LOC was also well represented on the 6.6km Blue course with Bryan Singleton seventh, Derek Allison tenth, Conan Harrod 11th, John Bettinson 23rd, Dave Jones 24th, Simon Filmore 25th, Stephen Edge 29th, Jemma Bell 31st, Roger Smith 34th, Steve Burge 35th, John Nash 41st, Martin Powell 42nd, Steve Breeze 44th, Rebecca McKenny 50th and Rebekah Beadle 53rd.

Warrior’s Andy Hyslop was fourth on the 9.1km Brown course with LOC's Nick Howlett eighth, Richard Wilson tenth and Iain Smith-Ward 11th and Julia Laverack (WAROC) 23rd.
