A 84th-minute goal from substitute David Davidson claimed all three points for Ossett Town in an end to end game of football that saw Kendal Town on the wrong end of a 3-2 scoreline.
A surprise visit from Kendal Club President and footballing legend Sir Tom Finney couldn’t inspire Kendal to repeat their exploits of last week and no late equaliser arrived as the visitors held on to their lead until the final whistle.
Kendal had already demonstrated considerable grit in the first half to haul themselves level after going two goals down within ten minutes.
A simple Aiden Savory header from an Andy Lee free-kick had opened the scoring after the Town defence had been caught napping on six minutes.
The visitors doubled their lead on ten minutes when Simon Baldrey was allowed to run down the right and fire a looping shot over Newnes from outside the area,
A succession of corners got Kendal back in the game. Tony Hallam sent one Michael Cole in-swinger crashing against the post on 20 minutes. But shortly after Carl Osman’s deft flick from Cole’s delivery put Town on the scoresheet on 26 minutes.
The winger turned provider less than ten minutes later, his low fizzed ball from the right was met by Taylor, who saw his effort blocked, but Craig Hobson reacted quickest to blast home from close range to level the score at 2-2 on 33 minutes.
With the teams re-emerging from the dressing rooms with the scores level, the early signs looked good for Town.
Cole somehow managed to steer a Ashcroft cross onto to crossbar from six-yards out shortly after the restart.
As the half went on the visitors found holes in the Town defence with increasing regularity. With both teams pushing forward either could have won it but the introduction of Davidson proved to be decisive.
The Ossett man was first to a long ball forward and quickly dummied his way past the oncoming Newnes to set up an easy finish and consign Town to a surprise defeat.
