W Lancs Football - Caswell clinches Cors victory

Trimpell /Slyne 0.

Milnthorpe Corinthians 1.

CORS avenged their Cup defeat at the hands of Trimpell a few weeks ago when they just came out on top in this West Lancs Division 1 league encounter.

Cors started brightly and a chance came when the Trimpell keeper fumbled a high cross and the ball landed at Chris Vincent's feet but the keeper reacted well to smother the shot.

As the half progressed, Trimpell began to dominate but failed to capitalise on some good build-up play and aerial superiority.

Cors keeper Russ Sharpe, reclaiming his place due to an injury to Nicky Dent, showed faultless handling and decision-making to keep Trimpell at bay and ensure a blank scoreline at half time.

Trimpell set up camp in the Cors half at the start of the second half and Cors struggled to repel wave upon wave of attacks.

The Cors defensive quartet of Gary Hartley, James Williams, Neil Hayton and Sam Cooper showed tremendous resolve and Sharpe made several good saves.

The introduction of Aidan Caswell for the off-colour Ollie Wilson, saw Cors start to pose a threat.

Caswell wriggled between two defenders on the edge of the area to get on the end of a pass from the tireless Paul Grattan, but the keeper saved off his legs..

The Trimpell keeper was not so lucky five minutes later when Caswell broke the deadlock. A swift counter-attack found Vincent at the corner of the penalty area. His square pass reached Caswell around the penalty spot. A drop of the shoulder sent the defender the wrong way, leaving the substitute to fire home over the advancing keeper.

Cors spurned a glorious chance to extend the lead when Adam Pashley broke out of midfield to lead a three-on-two assault. Unfortunately, Pashley chose the wrong option and lost the ball when team-mates Vincent and Caswell had both found space.

This almost cost Cors dearly when Trimpell managed to get the ball in the net. A deep cross cleared most of the players in the area, but the referee's whistle sounded for a foul on Sharpe before the Trimpell full-back bundled the ball over the line on the back post.

Cors saw out the game despite tremendous pressure and a ten-minute time added-on period before the final whistle. The win catapults Cors up to fourth place and a sustained run in the New Year may yet see them challenge for the promotion places.
