Quiver-full of records marks archers’ move

THE COUNTY’S archers have found a new home.

For many years comp- etitions organised by the Cumbria County Archery Association took place at Shap.

But although it was a large enough venue, Shap Village Hall was not without its problems.

The Cumbria association recently hosted a Combined Fita, well organised by Chris Battersby, at the sports centre in Penrith and it turned out to be a splendid venue.

Olympic hero Alan Wills was among those taking part.

Most indoor archery tournaments consist of five dozen arrows shot at single distance.

This special tournament involved shooting five dozen arrows in the morning at a distance of 25m at a 60cm target face and another five dozen in the afternoon at 18m and a 40cm face.

During lunch, the association took advantage of a captive audience to hold its annual meeting.

Magnificent scoring resulted from the day with no fewer than 23 county records broken by the following archers: Daniel Vives-Lynch (Cockermouth Company of Archers), B. Knowles (Eagle bowmen, near Penrith), J. Hunter and S. Pimblett (Beacon Archers, near Penrith), Roy Osbourne (BAE, Barrow), Fryer Wise (Kendal Bowmen) and Jackie Wilkinson, Alan Wills, Tim Allison and Kirsty Skivington of Sellafield Archery Club.

Allison and Skivington competed at the Junior National Championships the following weekb along with Alistair McWilliam. Skivington won a bronze medal in the U13 junior ladies (tied on score with second-placed girl who beat her on golds), while Allison finished 17th in the U16 junior men's category.
