SPORT is awaiting the forecast thaw – but will it come in time. Kendal Rugby Club are due to travel down the A65 to play Bradford and Bingley, who are close rivals in National League 3 North, at this stage of the season. The match is set to kick off at 2.15pm.
Most of the other local clubs face a trip. Kirkby Lonsdale go to Keswick, while Upper Eden are at Wigton. Windermere, too, are away at Chorley.
Kendal Town’s footballers managed to get a match in last Saturday by switching their Unibond Challenge Cup game to Woodley Sports’ artificial pitch, where they won 3-2 after extra time. It’s back to league action this Saturday with an away fixture at Prescot Cables (3pm kick-off).
The Westmorland County FA U18s host their Sheffield and Hallamshire counterparts in the Northern Counties Youth Competition at Kendal’s Parkside Road ground on Saturday (2pm kick-off).
Local club are also involved in Westmorland Benevolent Trophy matches (see sports pages for further details).
Carlisle Races is trying to beat the freeze-up with fingers-crossed for its meeting on Sunday, which features the £25,000 Border City Challenge Trophy Handicap Chase, a race which has attracted Cheltenham Festival-bound horses in the past. The first race is at 1.05pm.
