Orienteering: Smith wins Cracker

LAKELAND OC's Iain Smith-Ward won South Ribble OC's New Year Cracker in Low Park Wood near Sedgwick.

In this novelty event, competitors had to visit as many controls as possible within one hour.

A few managed to visit all 24 controls within the time allowed, but Iain did so in the fastest time of 34 minutes.

Former LOC members Bob Daly and Matt Rooke were close behind in third and fifth places with times of 35.50 and 42.43.

Lakeland's Simon Filmore, Steve Buckley and Rebekah Beadle visited 23 controls and were placed 19th , 20th and 22nd overall on their times.

Martin Powell was 27th with 22 controls, the same number as Warrior OC's Andy Hyslop, who slipped to 35th with his penalty for exceeding the hour. Paul Johnson and John Pullin were 29th and 34th with 21 controls.

Other Lakeland positions were Rachel Turner 43rd with 19 controls, Rob Marriott 48th (18), Jackie Chapman 50th (17), Louise McGurk 54th (14) and Stuart McGurk 64th (9).

In a shorter version of the score format with a 40-minute time allowance, Alison Fryer was best Lakeland performer in third place with 16 controls. John Nash was 4th, Derek Fryer 5th, Janet Nash 6th, Malcolm Campbell (WAROC) 10th, Liz Campbell (WAROC) 13th, Simon Lewis 14th, Anne Jago 16th, Margaret Buckley 17th, Carrie Beadle 20th and Bob Stewardson 21st. On a short, easy conventional course for juniors, James and Connor McGurk were winners, Natalie Beadle was third, Megan Lewis with Hannah Goodfellow 11th and Kate Lewis with Charlotte Goodfellow 16th. Robert McGurk was third on an extra short course.
