LAKELAND OC members travelled to Gelt Woods near Brampton for the final Cumbrian Galoppen event to secure victory in the 2008 series.
At the final reckoning in this competition between the five Cumbrian clubs, LOC had a points lead over West Cumberland OC with Borderliners in third place, Barrow OC fourth and Warrior OC fifth.
The last of the 12 events in the series was organised by Borderliners, and LOC’s leading scorers were the juniors on the lighter coloured courses.
Rowan Barton was winner on Yellow, with Adam Bartlett second, Lucy Segger third, Jack Rotherham fifth, Freya Sadler sixth, Fred Nicholls tenth, Lauren Millington 11th, Florence Dobson 13th and BARRO’s Thomas Edmonds 14th.
James Allison was winner for LOC on Orange, with Jonathan Crabbe second, Jonathon Barton third, Matt Edge eighth, Lois Jefferson ninth, Kirston Bell 14th, Chloe Bell 15th and Angus Dobson 16th. BARRO finishers on Orange were Sean Penellum fifth, Grace Thompson 13th and Jack Strickland 17th.
Sam Jefferson was another LOC winner on Light Green, with Katie Wright second and Malachy Buck third. Meghan Hallatt was fourth, Stan Johnston sixth, Amanda Elliott seventh, Verena Johnston 11th, Colette McKenny 12th, Megan Beard 13th, Lindsay Harrod 15th, Emma Sture 17th, Margaret Buckley 19th, Marissa Flower 25th and Angela Hepponstall 27th. For BARRO, Sarah Jones was fifth, Ella Hewson tenth, Sam Story 28th, Charlie Raine 29th and Theo Jones 30th.
BARRO’s Carl Edmonds won on the Green course with team mate Matthew Penellum taking sixth place on the day. For LOC, Tony Walker was fourth, with Max O’Hara eighth, Jack Filmore tenth, Martin Powell 11th, Karen Farley 21st, Dave Neild 23rd, Helen Neild 25th, Rachel Turner 27th, John Pullin 32nd, Marion Inchmore 34th, Bob Stewardson 35th, Alan Hepponstall 36th, Judith Filmore 37th, Ann Smith 40th and Luke Douglas 41st.
On Blue, LOC’s Michael McIver was second, ahead of his brother Martin in fifth, Steve Buckley eighth, Conan Harrod tenth, Graham Farley 11th, Simon Filmore 15th, Selwyn Wright 17th, Roger Smith 22nd, Steve Edge 23rd, Jemma Bell 27th, Rebecca McKenny 28th and Bob Forster 32nd.
LOC’s Graham Walkden was the only local competitor on the long Brown course, finishing in eighth place.
Consistent performances over the series saw several local runners achieve top ranking positions in each of the course colours. Based on their best five results on the Yellow courses, LOC’s Kirsten Bell, Hannah Cleary–Jones and Lois Jefferson were ranked third, fourth and fifth.
On Orange, LOC’s William Rigg and Jonathan Crabbe were second and fifth with Mandy Jefferson, Chloe Bell and WAROC’s Amy Whitehead finishing second, fourth and fifth girls.
On Light Green, LOC’s Paul Johnson and Malachy Buck finished second and third with BARRO’s Laura Jones first girl.
On Green, BARRO’s Carl Edmonds was ranked first, just ahead of clubmate Matthew Penellum in second with LOC’s Jack Perry fourth and WAROC’s Andrew Whitehead fifth. LOC’s Gill Browne, Jackie Chapman and Karen Farley were second, third and fifth women.
On Blue, LOC’s Jack Wright was ranked fifth.
On Brown, LOC’s Michael McIver finished fourth with WAROC’s Julia Laverack and LOC’s Dorothy Pelly first and second women.
The 2009 Galoppen Series kicks off this Sunday, Januarey 18, at an event organised by Borderliners at Penrith Beacon, parking at GR NY 534 312, registration from 10am. Colour coded courses suitable for newcomers will be available. For further details contact 01697 371579 · Jemma Bell won Lakeland’s Club Championships at a wet and windy event on Birkrigg Common near Ulverston on Sunday. Jemma, a member of the Ulverston Victoria High School orienteering squad, was first finisher in the event where start times were handicapped according to performances over the past year.
At the social gathering afterwards a number of other annual awards were made. Jack Wright, also of the UVHS squad, was awarded the Ian Blakey Trophy for most improved junior. Steve Buckley received the Fast Cat Trophy for the most senior club member to achieve national championship standard during the previous year. The Navigator Trophy was awarded to Graham Walkden for his outstanding service as club chairman for six years.
