The 2009 Cumbrian Orienteering Galoppen series started in snow-covered woods surrounding Penrith Beacon.
However the wintry conditions failed to deter a good turnout of competitors from South Cumbria.
Lakeland OC had two course winners in juniors Jack Wright on the technical Green and Nathan Metcalfe on Light Green.
Barrow OC’s Georgia Moore won the Yellow course with Lakeland’s Hannah Cleary-Jones in fourth place, James Allison fifth, Jack Rotherham eighth, Lauren Millington 14th, BARRO’s Thomas Edmonds 24th and Warrior OC’s Peter Clough 29th.
LOC’s Tom Spencer was second on Orange with Jonathan Crabbe fifth, Robin Lawn-Tee sixth, Sean Penellum (BARRO) 12th, Amy Whitehead (WAROC) 18th, Chloe Bell 19th, Jack Strickland (BARRO) 20th, Angela Towler 23rd and Brian Clough (WAROC) 30th.
Some girls successfully completed both short courses. Lakeland’s Lois Jefferson was second on Yellow and seventh on Orange, Lucy Segger (7th and 22nd), Kirsten Bell (11th and 13th), Collette Baldwin (23rd and 27th) and Nicole Costigan (28th and 21st). Barrow’s Ella Hewson (9th and 8th) and Grace Thompson (10th and 14th).
On Light Green, Lakeland had Max O’Hara in second place, Rachel Singleton sixth, Simon Lewis seventh, Kelly Raymond ninth, Sam Jefferson tenth, Amelia Elliot 12th, Kathryn Brown 14th, Collette McKenny 15th, Natalie Beadle 16th, Lindsay Harrod 19th, Jo Cleary 22nd, Mandy Jefferson 23rd, Ben Hewson 25th, Matt Edge 26th, Lydia Howard 31st, Luke Douglas 32nd, Marissa Flower 34th, Adam Perry 35th and Emma Sture 42nd. Barrow’s Sarah and Janet Jones were 27th and 30th.
On Green, Warrior’s Andy Hyslop was second with Barrow’s Matthew Penellum in third place.
Other Lakeland runners on this course were Philip Metcalfe fourth, Martin McIver fifth, Michael Hudson sixth, Laura Jones (BARRO) tenth, Jack Perry 12th, Zephan Buck 14th, Andrew Whitehead (WAROC) 17th, Jessica Myers 19th, Julia Bing 22nd, Tom Adams 23rd, Rick Browne 27th, Dave Neild 29th, Dave Hewitt 34th, Tim Field 35th, Josh Jenkinson 39th, Geoff Price 40th, Dave Binks (WAROC) 42nd, Janet Nash 43rd, Rachel Turner 46th, Daisy Lawn-Tee 52nd, Helen Neild 54th, Gill Browne 57th, Pauline Richardson 61st, Anne Jago 63rd, Judith Filmore 65th, Marion Inchmore 67th and Bob Stewardson 68th.
On a technical Short Green course, Barrow’s Max Waplington was third with Warrior’s John Howell fifth, followed by Lakeland’s Stan Johnston sixth, Jackie Chapman seventh, Richard Day eighth, Charles Flanagan ninth, Pat Howell (WAROC) 11th, Lorna Stewart 14th, Verena Johnston 17th, Margaret Buckley 20th, Erica Clapp 23rd and Jane Whitehead (WAROC) 25th.
Barrow junior Carl Edmonds ran up to the Blue course to take 21st place. Lakeland positions were Bryan Singleton fourth, Jonathan Lagoe ninth, Richard Tiley 19th, Simon Filmore 25th, Conan Harrod 30th, Steve Buckley 33rd, Dick Towler 34th, Rebekah Beadle 36th, Dave Jones 40th, Steve Edge 43rd, Martin Powell 46th, John Nash 47th, Steve Burge 51st, Rob Marriott 53rd, Judy Burge 55th, Diana McClure 64th and Anne Wilson 66th.
On Brown, Lakeland’s Richard Wilson was 12th, ahead of clubmates Graham Walkden 19th, Tony Richardson 22nd and Paul Johnston 23rd and Warrior’s Julia Laverack 25th.
