Cross-Country - Doey charges to Hyndburn victory

HALF-term holidays meant the number of Kendal AAC junior competitors was down for the fifth round of the Mid-Lancs Cross Country League at Wilson Field, Hynburn, on Saturday.

U11 Matt Doey took the mainly single-track route, the mud and hills in his stride, leading from the gun.

Although he was challenged with 500 metres to go, Matt eased away to be a clear winner once again.

U13 Chloe Holehead, from the younger end of the age group, pulled through to a satisfying 34th.

U15 high jumper Joelle Campbell used the race as part of a stamina-building programme and was a pleasing 31st.

The strong U15 boys teams finished second behind Lancaster & Morecambe, with Kendal’s run of the day going to Michael Hoyle (Sixth), who was followed by Luke Ingham (14th) and Tim Hartley (19th).

Jake Carradus ran well at the younger end of the group.

U17 Patrick Vicary continued to impress, battling for the lead with Ashley Kay of Rossendale before he turned an ankle in the woods. He only lost a few strides and fought back bravely to finished second, five seconds behind his rival.

With the young women’s focus at a high level, the Kendal supervets took the limelight.

Dianne Priestley caught one of her rivals and made herm ove with a mile to go, coming home third V55.

Marion Smith was happy to finish 7th V55, while 73-year-old Heather Goodman was tenth V55, securing first place for the team once again.

Sue Russell enjoyed her race to be 18th V45 and Dianne, Sue and Marion were also fourth V45 team, while Carolyn Kevan finishing 22nd V45.

Peter Acland’s consistency continued as he finished 94th in the senior men’s race.

In only his second cross-country run, coach Dave Wright came 192nd, while injury hit Paul Percival-Smith but he still managed to limp across the finish.
