Orienteering - Nicky Nook boosts for Vic runners


ULVERSTON Victoria High School orienteers Jack Wright and Sam Jefferson scored further wins for Lakeland OC on the Blue and Light Green courses at South Ribble OC’s colour coded event at Nicky Nook, near Garstang, in a steep-sided wooded valley and over adjacent open fell.

Other local orienteers were well placed on all courses, including the longest – the 7.1km Brown – were Lakeland’s Mark Saunders and Chris Hepponstall were second and fourth with Warrior OC’s Andy Hyslop fifth.

Lakeland’s Richard Wilson was eighth, Tony Richardson 15th, Graham Walkden 21st, Rob Marriott 27th and Barrow OC’s Simon Austin 16th.

Barrow junior Matthew Penellum was second on the 4.8km Blue course heading a good number from Lakeland – Martin McIver sixth, Simon Filmore 11th, Rick Browne 15th, Chris Marshall 18th.

Another Barrow junior, Jonathan Austin, fourth on the 3.4km Green course, headed more Lakeland runners – Karen Farley eighth, Carrie Beadle tenth, Jackie Chapman 13th, Diana McClure 14th.

Lakeland placings on the 2.7km Light Green course included James Todhunter third, Katie Mitchell sixth, Kathryn Brown ninth, Amelia Elliott 11th, Natalie Beadle 12th, Chloe Bell 14th, Mandy Jefferson 15th, Emma Sture 16th, Colette McKenny 19th.

On the 2.6km Orange course Lakeland’s Kirsten Bell was second, Lois Jefferson fifth, Oliver Mills 12th and Fred Nicholls 13th with Warrior’s Peter and Anna Clough 14th and 21st. Lakeland’s Elizabeth and Ruth Watton were sixth and ninth on the 1.9km Yellow course.

The next event in the Cumbrian Gallopen Series will be on Sunday, February 22, in the wooded Greta Gorge and on Latrigg near Keswick.
