ANOTHER tight derby affair with Fylde ended with Kendal losing a knife-edge National 3 North match at Mint Bridge by the narrowest of margins - an 18-17 defeat.

Sad to report, the match began with a minute's silence in memory of Mr John Kremer, a much respected stalwart of the club who died during the week.

Deprived of ball for a good deal of the first half, Kendal fell behind as the visitors' right wing Mike Waywell scored two tries in the opening quarter, both of which he failed to convert, for a 10-0 lead.

Those scores in the sixth and 18th minutes brought Kendal to their senses and they began to get their act together with a spell of decent driving play through the forwards.

The sequence ended when they got off the mark as they mauled their way towards the tryline from a penalty lineout for Garry Holmes to cross the whitewash, Park converting.

Waywell saw a penalty attempt bounce out off the post and Fylde went close to a third try when Oliver Brennand went over the line but was penalised for not releasing under good retrieval work by Rob Aloe.

Eight minutes into the second half Kendal went 12-10 ahead thanks to a Lewis Boyd try.

A good, patient build-up had Fylde under pressure in their own 22 and led to Mark Wilson delivering a perfectly-timed pass to put Boyd over in the corner. Park - kicking in the absence of injured fly-half Dan Stephens - just failed with the conversion attempt.

Kendal won a penalty but the decision to take it quickly failed to pay off, and a possible three points squandered was to come back to haunt Kendal.

Instead Waywell slotted over a simple penalty to regain the lead for Fylde at 13-12 in the 70th minute.

Kendal replied with a stunning try, created by Boyd at his most elusive best on the right with a 40-metre dash, centre Matt Gracie supporting well to dot down.

Park's kick unluckily bounced off the bar and back out - but Kendal were 17-13 ahead with eight minutes left.

Instead of consolidating, Kendal gifted a soft try to Fylde, turning over ball in midfield for centre Tom Albinson to beat his pursuers to Waywell's chip over the top.

The five pointer gave Fylde a one-point lead and after right wing Zane Butler was pulled back as he attempted to out-run a lock-forward (the referee ruled a quick lineout could not be allowed as the line had been set) the visitors survived nine minutes of added-on time.

A frustrating afternoon for Kendal, who looked capable of winning but struggled with their decision-making.
