Sport - A look ahead to this weekend

5:23pm Monday 23rd February 2009

WITH the cold snap behind us the region’s local football and rugby teams are finally making headway into the backlog of games built up over the big freeze.

While Kendal Rugby Club and Kendal Town face away days at Halifax and Witton Albion respectively this Saturday, there is a busy weekend of fixtures for teams of both codes in the local leagues.

In the pick of the rugby fixtures, local rivals Kirkby Lonsdale and Vale of Lune square up for what is sure to be a hugely competitive game at Underley Park.

Not that this infamous grudge match needed added spice, but with just three points separating top of the pack Vale of Lune and third-placed Kirkby Lonsdale there is sure to be more than just local pride at stake when the two kick-off at 2:15pm.

In the Bluefin Westmorland Football League, the decision to cancel all cup competitions this season because of the huge number of games cancelled over the last few months wasn’t one which was taken lightly, but it has seen league fixtures resume across the divisions after much stopping and starting.

Top of division one, Wetheriggs travel to take on Appleby, Second on goal difference Carvetii host a struggling Sedbergh outfit. And there is a mid-table battle between seventh-placed Kendal County and fourth placed Keswick, a win for home team Kendal would take them to within a point of Keswick.
