Football – Town go down at Frickley

KENDAL Town suffered their second league defeat in four days as they went down 2-1 away at Frickley Athletic.

In a game that ebbed and flowed both teams had spells in the ascendancy and ultimately it was the home sides ability to convert their chances in goals that saw them run out winners.

Although Frickley started the brighter of the two teams they took the lead through the softest of goals as David Newnes made a hugely out of character error on nine minutes.

A Chris White corner from the left hand side looked to have been safely collected by the Kendal keeper, but somewhere in between catching the cross and bringing the ball into his body Newnes dropped the ball over his line to make it 1-0.

With both sides giving away plenty of free kicks Kendal struggled to create any momentum for much of the first half. It was only when the first 45 was drawing to a close that Kendal came alive.

Craig Hobson saw a one on one effort saved on 38 minutes, while Tony Hallam narrowly missed making contact with a Michael Cole corner that had been deflected into the six-yard area.

But Town got their equalizer with the last play of the half as Adam Nicklin could only parry Alex Taylor’s venomous drive and Cole was on hand to dispatch the follow up on 47 minutes.

Kendal started the second half on the attack and Michael Cole had a great chance to put Town ahead when he latched on to Taylor’s cross and fired a low volley, the effort looked goal bound but defender Steve Robinson was back with a last ditch tackle to send the ball out for a corner.

Town continued to have the run of things early on in the second half with an Alex Taylor seeing his shot after a great run cleared of the line, with Steve Robinson once again saving his team.

But as the half wore on Kendal seemed to lose their momentum and them home side came back into it with David Newnes being called off his line to prevent White collecting a long ball forward on 73 minutes.

On 83 minutes a hopeful ball was tossed into the Kendal area and number seven Danny Clarke turned and fired the ball into the top right corner leaving Newnes with no chance.

Town threw men forward in the final minutes and almost drew level once again when a Tony Hallam knock down found Mulvaney with a sight of goal, the winger pulled the trigger but the ball flew well wide taking with it Kendal’s hopes of a draw.
