Football - Burrows double guides Cartmel to cup victory

PREMIER Division Cartmel travelled to play Millhead in the fourth round of the Adam and Gaskell Senior Cup and found it anything but easy against lowly Division One opponents.

Millhead often had Cartmel back pedalling in a close game but goals by the energetic Scott Burrows (2) and Dean Richards cancelled out the strikes by Bradley Shuttleworth and Dominic Wooff to put Cartmel in the semi-finals.

Carnforth Rangers and Highgrove were involved in one of the semi-finals and it went to extra time then penalties. Highgrove captain Russell Mitchell put his side ahead, but Carnforth’s Matthew Garwood equalised and the tie went to a penalty shoot-out after extra time.

In the tense finish from the spot Carnforth were edged out 4-3.

In the Premier Division Storeys moved to within two points of leaders Marsh United when they beat lowly Galgate by 4-1.

Ingleton warmed up for their Craven Cup semi-final by defeating third-placed TIC Dynamos 4-1 in the league.

On target were David Whitfield, recent signing Nathan Jackson (2), but a screamer of an own goal by Luke Vallente topped the lot, while Mark Wiggins replied for the Dynamos.

Kirkby Lonsdale’s indifferent league form continued when losing 3-1 to Morecambe Royals.

A bright spot was the display by 16-year-old Grant Troughton, who has been scoring lots of goals for the reserves, and did not disappoint with his first goal for the senior side.

It was not enough to stop Royals, who scored three times through Matthew Armistead, Mark Murphy and Luke Suligowski.

In Division 1 Ingleton Reserves, third from bottom, clinched a 2-1 win over fifth-placed College AFC.

Leading scorer Alex Hartley scored both goals for Ingleton, while Simon Brister relied for College. College had most of the play but could only score once through Simon Brister.

Second-placed Bentham trailed to Morecambe Royals Reserves when Adam Campbell scored for a deserved 1-0 half-time lead.

The second half belonged to Bentham as they scored five times without reply through Kieron Spencer (2), Adam Mason, Stuart Ralph and Thomas Burns.

In Division 2, Kirkby Lonsdale lost 3-1 to promotion seekers Furness Rovers, who led 3-0 thanks to goals by brothers Joe and Tom Leslie and Tom Shanks, while Ben Taylor replied for Kirkby.

Swarthmoor Reserves took on fellow strugglers Caton United Reserves but had to give best with only a Ben Dryden goal for their efforts as Caton ran out 3-1 winners with strikers from Dan Gilchrist, Matt O’Donnell and Dave Bamford.

In Division 3, Bentham Reserves probably ended any hopes that Gregson had of promotion with a 4-2 defeat.

Defender Oliver Harrison was pushed up into attack and bagged a superb hat-trick, with Dan Jackson supplying the fourth goal. Gregson scored twice through Oliver Bailey and Dominic Williams.
