A David Foster hat-trick ensured Kendal Town’s promotion march stays on track as Town ran out 3-2 winners over North Ferriby United despite having Craig Hobson sent off.
Town were two goals up with the game less than 15 minute old. Foster – who had failed to score in the five games since his return to Town – got in between defender an goalkeeper to latch onto a Danny Wisdom pass and poke the ball into the net from close range on 11 minutes.
The striker’s second came three minutes later. A good move saw Michael Cole set up Wisdom for a shot on the left corner of the box. Although the low drive was well saved by Ferriby custodian Steve Wilson, the keeper couldn’t hold onto the ball and Foster was on hand to slot home the rebound.
Town were guilty of taking their foot off the pedal as half time drew closer. The game was thrown back open on 38 minutes when centre backs Hallam and Wordsworth got in each others way when trying to clear a looping delivery on the edge of the box and Colin Hunter nipped in to run on and finish neatly over the on-coming David Newnes.
Town’s early endeavour was undone in the opening exchanges of the second half. Minutes after the restart Russell Fry was allowed to advance unchecked deep into the home half and unleash a low shot that hit the right post and went in.
But with the second half ten minutes old, Foster reinstated his sides advantage with the pick of his goals. A Cole set piece delivery was flicked on into Foster’s path and the striker volleyed emphatically across goal from the back post to make it 3-2.
Much of the second half seemed to be interrupted by petty referring decisions and stoppages in play. Ferriby did rouse themselves for one last assault on the Town goal late on with Gary Bradshaw looking lively.
But Kendal had their wits about them and defended well. Substitute striker Craig Hobson was shown a second yellow late on for kicking the ball away. Despite a numerical advantage for the four minutes of injury time Ferriby couldn’t make it count and Town claimed an important win with Hobson’s dismissal the only blemish on an otherwise satisfactory day in the sunshine.
