A 53rd minute goal from substitute striker Craig Hobson ensured Kendal held Unibond League leaders Eastwood Town to a 1-1 draw at Coronation Park.
Hobson’s goal was just reward for a much-improved second half performance in which Lee Ascroft’s men took the game to Eastwood.
Kendal had made life difficult for themselves in the opening 45 minutes. After Andy Todd had fired the home side ahead on nine minutes – shooting low across Newnes into the bottom right – Kendal failed to muster much in the way of a response and rarely looked like mounting a serious threat on Ian Deakin’s goal.
Town emerged from the half time interval with greater purpose in their passing, but it was the introduction of Craig Hobson on 48 minutes that brought cohesion to Kendal’s attack.
Hobson’s scored with almost his first touch of the game. Lee Mulvaney utilised space down the right and sent in a great cross to the near post where Hobson flew in with the diving header to send Town level.
The goal signalled a far more entertaining approach from both teams and either could have claimed all the points as they pushed forward.
Michael Cole could, and probably should have won it for Town in injury time after being set up for the one-on-one by Danny Wisdom, but hit his effort right at Deakin. Although Manager Lee Ashcroft would doubtless have loved to take all the points from today’s encounter, a point away at Eastwood is very much a point gained and keeps Kendal in the hunt for promotion.
