Football - Late double earns Town a vital point

TWO late goals salvaged a point for Kendal as Town came back from 2-0 down in the dying moments against relegation battling Buxton.

Alex Taylor and Kieran Walmsley proved to be Town’s heroes on the night, netting in the 89th and 91st minute respectively with Walmsley’s equaliser prompting a pitch invasion as Kendal’s management team sprinted onto the pitch to celebrate with the players.

Home side Buxton will feel hugely aggrieved that they could not hold on to claim all three points and move away from the relegation zone, particularly after taking the lead on five minutes via Gavin Knight.

Buxton continued to dominate and doubled their lead with 29 minutes gone after Mark Reed rounded the Kendal defence and then the on-coming Newnes to make it 2-0.

At the other end, Buxton’s stand-in keeper Chris Backhouse, had his first real test of the game on 34 minutes when Danny Wisdom found himself through on goal, only to make a real mess of things.

The home side had a scare with just over an hour gone after a dangerous ball into the area had to be cleared off the line by Gregg Anderson, the defender only cleared the ball back into a crowded area but the referee blew for a foul before Town could capitalise.

With time running out for Kendal a lighting quick counter attack set up Taylor on 89 minutes and the striker made no mistake to haul Town to within a goal.

A second goal followed just a couple of minutes later when Walmsley’s fierce shot hit the back of the net and then bounced back out again, sending Town’s management into raptures - and earning Lee Ashcroft a sending-off.
