KENDAL Cricket Club had to turn to a substitute professional in Richard Waite as they got off to a winning start as the Furness Building Society Northern Premier League with a 12-point, two-wicket win at Barrow on Saturday.
While defending champions Netherfield sat out an opening-day bye, Kendal began without South African Ross McMillan, who like the majority of the other league professionals has been held up by new work permit processes.
Cumberland CC player Waite, who is from Stockon-on-Tees CC, served up an impressive 8-65 with the his off-breaks.
Barrow made 168-9 with Tod Bamber faring best with 48. In reply Kendal achieved the target at 169-8 after opener Ikram Ullah made 30 and ninth-wicket pair Donovan du Plessis (31no) and Stuart Parkin (18no) saw them home in a tight call.
There were first-day centuries for Carnforth's Robert Parker and Chorley's Adam Peacock.
