LEVENS A achieved a good win away against Windermere in the Rothay League, taking five of the individual games and at the same time depriving the home team of second place in the league.
Leven Valley B pushed Windermere further down the table to fourth place with a similar 7-3 victory away to Levens B. Meanwhile, at the other end of the table, Margaret Sharp of struggling Bowness B had a good win against Angela Athersmith of Coniston A, and further victories by George Sharp and John Salton, with good support from the rest, held the current leaders to a modest 7-3 win. Allithwaite B aided their A team in Division 2 by winning a closely-fought home match against Ambleside A 6-4. A three-point gap has opened up at the top of the table, with Allithwaite A having won 7-3 away at Ambleside B. Staveley B are the only team still without a win, but their consistently high scoring games are keeping them three positions above the bottom of the table. STEVE and Mark Ashburn won the K.A. Hale Doubles, sponsored by Willacy Contractors Ltd, on Saturday. The Ashburns beat Harold and Danie Varcoel 21-16 in the final. The beaten semi-finalists (lost to the topurnament winners) were Anthony and Jenna Goth (21-14), while the Varcoes beat Danny Kirby and Ken McQueen 21-15. Joyce Foxcroft and Martin Gilpin (Hale) won the May Day Pairs held at Pilling on Monday. They beat David Jenkinson and Ian Taylor 21-17 in the final. C. Wayatt and J. Loveland (Windermere) won Crosthwaite’s Open Pairs, sponsored by the Punch Bowl, on Sunday. They beat Carnforth’s A. Parry and B. Edmondson 21-13 in the final. In the semi-finals the tournament winenrs beat Crosthwaite’s *. Richardson and T. Smith 21-13, while the other beaten semi-finalists were P. Shaw and J. Smith (Heversham), who also lost 21-13.
