Ambleside clinch title

AMBLESIDE United were this week celebrating the first division championship in the Bluefin Insurance Westmorland League for the second consecutive season.

Ambleside secured the title with a 4-2 win over Sedbergh Wanderers in midweek.

It put the Silverware in safekeeping ahead of their final match of the season against old rivals Wetheriggs United at Miller Field today.

Ambleside’s Steve Edmondson who co-manages the side with Matt Bland said: “ It’s good to get over the finish line because it’s been a tough run in.

“ We’ve been playing up to three times a week over the past few weeks and that takes its toll.

“Fortunately we’ve got a good squad and had the resources and flexibility to pull in players when needed.

It’s been especially gratifying to do back to title wins – it went to goal difference last year but we’ve learnt from the experience and up to Saturday we’ve only been beaten once in the League to date”.

Ambleside’s final push gathered momentum last Thursday with a 3-1 win over Keswick with goals from Zach Clark, a Chris Barton penalty and a David Cooper strike.

But it was a win over Carvetii United on Saturday that was to prove crucial.

Ambleside responded to this key match by pulling off a 5-1 win over their challengers.

In a relentless first half performance Ambleside were 4-0 by the interval with goals from Barton, Clark, Jamie Parkinson, Simon Huse and Phil Parsons.

When Ambleside went on to defeat Sedbergh 4-2 on Tuesday it meant they could not be caught with a match left to play.

Ambleside will be presented with their trophy today.
