IT WAS dry for the practice runs at Saturday’s Barbon Hillclimb, but just as the class runs in the afternoon began the heavens opened and forced the action to be suspended to allow the excess rainwater to run off.
The class runs were completed and a top 12 run-off took place.
Best time of the day went to Martin Groves with a time of 21-58 competing in a Gould GR55B-XB the class for racing cars over two litres.
The class consisted of 12 competitors with four shared cars - and last year’s Hillclimb champion Scott Moran could only finish fourth, also beaten by ex-policeman XChris Merrick, in third, and his father Roger Moran, in second.
Class J (up to 1600cc racing cars) was hotly contested with ten competitors and Mike Fitzsimons took the spoils.
Trophy-winners included Graham Curwen in a Van Diemen RF91 took the Formula Ford Best Time of Day.
Neil Bennett won class M in a 4.5 Litre Batten Special with a time of 33.49 seconds and collected the Underfell Trophy.
Mike Fitzsimons collected the trophy for the best time by a driver over 65 years of age.
Keith Edwards won the Moorfields Cup presented to the fastest member of Westmorland Motor Club living in the LA and CA postcode areas.
Class winners were: Allan Warburton (Caterham 7), Richard Hargreaves (Mitsubishi Evo 6), Andrew Russell (Ginetta G15), Mark Dempster (Raw Striker 1600), Keith Edwards (Audi Sport Quattro), Andrew Griffith (Hayabusa engined Caterham), Colin Birkbeck (Caterham 7), Gary Stephens (1700cc Mallock Mk 21/24B), Andrew Platt ( 2- litre Dallara).
