Orienteering - Juniors fare well against seniors at Muncaster


LAKELAND OC juniors Carrie Beadle and Max O’Hara performed well against senior competitors on fully technical courses at West Cumberland OC’s Regional Event at Muncaster.

Carrie had a great run to finish fifth on the 4km Green course and Max, still showing the good form he had at the recent World Schools Championships in Spain, was ninth on the 5.9km Blue course.

Barrow junior Carl Edmonds won the Blue course with clubmate Matthew Penellum taking sixth place.

On the 7.2km Brown course, Lakeland senior Richard Lecky-Thompson was third, with clubmates Dave Charles in eighth place, Simon Filmore 12th and Selwyn Wright 14th.

Other senior results on Blue were Rick Browne tenth, Warrior Julia Laverack 16th, John Bettinson 18th and Roger Smith 20th.

On the 4.8km Short Blue course, Karen Farley was tenth, Rebekah Beadle 12th and Steve Kruger 15th .

On Green, Warriors Dave Binks and John Howell were 14th and 15th.

On the 3.2km Short Green course, Warrior Pat Howell at 12th headed Lakeland’s Ann Smith 15th, Bob Stewardson 16th and Margaret Buckley 17th.

Leading Lakeland juniors on the intermediate difficulty 3.1km Light Green course were Patrick Rigg fourth, Katie Wright fifth and Malachy Buck tenth with Barrow’s Sarah Jones in ninth place.

Barrow’s Jack Strickland won the 2.8km Orange course followed by Lakeland’s Lucy Segger second, Lois Jefferson third and Collette Baldwin fourth. Warriors Hazel and Kirsty Laverack were 12th and 13th on Yellow.

Barrow’s Mason Strickland won White, ahead of clubmates Hannah Pryer in third and Thomas Edmonds fifth.

A GROUP from Ulverston Victoria High School’s orienteering squad and some of the Lakeland seniors travelled to Speyside for the Scottish Championships.

Leading performances by the girls in W12A were Lois Jefferson, Kirsten Bell and Lucy Segger in fourth, fifth and sixth places. In W14A, Meghan Hallett was eighth, Lydia Howard tenth, Collette McKenny 12th, Kate Douglas 16th and Chloe Bell 17th with Collette Baldwin placing third in W14B. In W18 Long Jemma Bell was fourth, Becca McKenny fifth and Jessica Myers sixth while Kate Farley won W18 Short with Danielle Gabbert in second place.

Adam Bartlett was highest placed of the boys, taking third in M12A, with Jack Rotherham, Oliver Mills and Fred Nicholls in 18th, 19th and 20th. In M14A Sam Jefferson was ninth, Jonathan Crabbe 13th and Tom Spencer 16th. In M16A Nathan Metcalfe, Max O’Hara and Luke Douglas were ninth, tenth and 11th. Chris Marshall was eighth in M18L In the Senior Women’s classes, Warrior Julia Laverack was 12th in W45L, ahead of Lakeland’s Karen Farley in 16th. In W50L Gill Browne was ninth and Pauline Richardson 15th with Clare Evans taking third place in W50S.

In W55L Janet Nash was seventh and Sheila Hobson 11th. Margaret Buckley was fifth in W60S.

Chris Hepponstall was 13th in the Men’s 21 Elite class. Jonathan Lagoe was eighth M50L, Rick Browne 15th M55L, Tony Richardson and Mike Hobson 11th and 19th M60L. Steve Buckley won W60S ahead of Geoff Price in seventh place and Graham Farley was eighth M45S.

In the following days Relay Championships, the Lakeland team of Jessica Myers, Meghan Hallett and Max O’Hara was placed fourth in the older juniors class.

In the younger juniors class, the team of Jack Rotherham, Jonathan Crabbe and Sam Jefferson took eighth place. The senior team of Karen Farley, Steve Buckley and Rick Browne took fifth place in their class.

Lakeland’s Jackie Chapman and Diana McClure made worthwhile journeys to Shropshire for a three-day event.

Jackie finished second overall in W50L with a win on day one and third places on days two and three. Diana finished fifth overall in W55L.
