Bowls - Staveley recover top spot in see-saw season

THE leap-frogging at the top of Division 1 in the Rothay League continued with Staveley A regaining the top spot after winning a closely-fought match against Bowness A, while Coniston A lost an even tighter match away at Lower Holker A.

Meanwhile, Burneside A moved closer to the top two after achieving a 9-1 victory against struggling Coniston B. However, perhaps the most satisfying result, to all except the Leven Valley A team, took place at Bowness where the B team finally managed to chalk up a victory.

In Division 2, Ambleside A and Allithwaite A continue with their mutual march towards first division status next year. There is a 30-point gap between them and the third-placed Hawkshead B.

League president John Haddow was also captain of the the Division 2 Knockout Cup winners Hawkshead A and received the trophy from the league’s fixtures secretary after his team’s defeat of Ambleside A in the final.

Ambleside won two doubles matches 21-20 but Hawkshead’s 21-14 success in the last match gave them the spoils on aggregate scores. Hawkshead B and Allithwaite a were the other semi-finalists.
