Fell Running - Jebb breaks Borrowdale duck at last

ROB Jebb achieved his ambition of winning the Borrowdale Fell Race in the 2009 renewal.

Although it was dry weather by the time of the start of the race, there had been a lot of rain overnight and during the preivous week, leading Staveley-based Jebb to describe the event as a “hard” test.

As is his wont, Jebb set off fast and held a lead of some two minutes by the summit of Scafell Pike.

Barring a navigational error of the sort which blighted his prospects last year, the race looked to be at Jebb’s mercy.

There was no such lapse this time and Jebb finished tired but comfortably ahead of Ben Bardsley (Borrowdale FR), who proved the strongest of a small pack of chasers.

Mary Gillie (Clwydian Ranger Runners) ran 14 minutes faster than last year and was the unexpected winner of the women’s race. There were 321 starters.

TOM Addison outpointed the Ambleside Rydal Round winner Alastair Dunn in the Farleton Knott Fell Race by a 21-second margin on Sunday.

Both Helm Hill runners had run at Ambleside Sports three days earlier, but having been runner-up in the shorter Guides Race, Addison had the fresher legs and it counted after he took up the running on the first climb up the side of Farleton Knott.

By the time he had reached the steep screes descent he had a healthy lead over Tom Anderson. Anderson kept falling on the unstable ground and Dunn moved through to second where he put in a big effort on the steep climb back to the top of the Knott to try to catch Addison. Veteran Mark Croasdale (Lancaster & Morecambe) was third.

Helm Hill’s Kathleen Aubrey was second to women’s race winner Jenny Dybeck of Ilkley Harriers.
