Wyre Villa 2.
M’thorpe Corinths 0.
CORS’ opening West Lancs Division 1 fixture of the new season featured a lacklustre at Wyre Villa which was a long way short of some promising pre-season efforts.
Wyre Villa took the lead after ten minutes from a quickly-taken free kick that left Cors’ keeper Rick Carter stranded as a forward headed into an empty net.
Cors created little but almost equalised as Steve Chapman had a goal-bound prod hacked away from equalised from a goalmouth scramble following a corner.
In the second half, Cors were denied again when a collison between the Wyre keeper and his own defender put the ball at Kris Clough’s feet. His left-foot volley was heading for the top corner until headed behind.
Clough again forced a good stop from the Wyre keeper when his 20-yard free kick was palmed away.
Cors threw more men forward and it almost paid off when Clough burst through, but his eventual shot was smothered by the covering defence.
Gaps at the back proved the Milnthorpe side’s undoing as another Wyre forward netted despite being partially blocked.
Cors’ next game is at home on Tuesday, August 25 to newly-promoted Thornton Cleveleys.
