Orienteering - Lakeland juniors sweep up in Galoppen test


ORIENTEERS turned out in force at Subberthwaite for Lakeland OC’s Cumbrian Galoppen series event.

Lakeland juniors won all three of the less technical courses and took the majority of the other leading positions.

Adam Bartlett and Jack Rotherham recorded identical times to lead the 2.1km Yellow course ahead of Lucy Segger in seventh, Dan Miller ninth, Ben Nicholl 11th, Hannah Metcalfe 15th, Lauren Millington 16th, Anna Maxwell 17th and Katie Lewis 19th.

Sam Jefferson won the 2.5km Orange course, just edging Tom Spencer into second with leading girl Chloe Bell third, Kelly Raymond fourth, Jonathan Crabbe seventh, Collette McKenny eighth, Kirsty Burton 12th and Megan Lewis 13th.

LOC almost had a clean sweep on the 3.6km Light Green with Nathan Metcalfe winning, Zephan Buck second, first girl Jessica Courtman fifth, Jessica Myers sixth, Natalie Beadle seventh, Ann Metcalfe ninth, Peter Henegan tenth, Megan Beard 11th and Matt Edge 13th. Barrow’s Sean Penellum was placed fourth.

Richard Tiley sped round the 4.5km Green course to secure one LOC senior victory on the technical courses with clubmate Rick Browne in tenth.

Barrow’s Mick Waplington was 12th and Warrior Andrew Whitehead 13th with other leading places over this well subscribed course taken by LOC’s Jackie Chapman 14th, Becca McKenny 15th, Mike Atherton 17th and Sid Smith 19th.

On the 3.1km Short Green, veteran Stan Johnson was third, Marion Inchmore eighth and Alan Hepponstall tenth.

Two LOC members who usually do their orienteering on bikes performed well on the 6km Blue course – current British Mountain Bike Orienteering Champion Bryan Singleton was seventh and Charlotte Somers-Cocks was ninth.

Both recently represented Great Britain in the world championships in Israel. Others highly placed for LOC on this Blue course were Derek Ratcliffe eighth, Rebekah Beadle tenth, Dick Towler 13th, John Nash 17th and Simon Filmore 19th.

Warrior Martin Bagness won the longest course, the 8.1km Brown, with LOC’s Richard Wilson ninth, Iain Smith-Ward 14th, Martin Smith 18th and Julian Donnelly 20th.
