Judo star Hughes collects Cumbria Sports Personality award

DAVID Hughes received the top award at the Cumbria Sports Awards last night, Friday, when he was named Sports Personality of the Year.

Hughes, from Carlisle, had an outstanding year in 2009as he was crowned World Masters Judo Champion in Atlanta and also retained the British Championship in the M6 - 81kg ctaegory.

Coun Roger Bingham, chairman of Cumbria County Council, presented Hughes with the award at the Low Wood Hotel in Windermere as Olympians Jonathan Edwards CBE and Dr Alison Mowbray joined the best of Cumbrian sporting talent.

During the evening Edwards and Mowbray gave inspirational talks, looking back on their careers and encouraging the rising stars to go out their and strive for their ambitions.

Disability Award: DEAN KELLY, Barrow.

Coach Award: STEPHEN HUGHES, Workington.

Volunteer Award: NIALL HOLMES, Haverigg.

Young Leader Award: JEMMA BELL, Ulverston.

Service to Sport: MIKE LIPTROTT, Kendal.

Special Award: DEREK LACEY, Carlisle.

Performance of the year: CUMBRIA UNION OF GOLF CLUBS Sports Personality: DAVID HUGHES, Carlisle.

Be Inspired Award: DEAN KELLY, Barrow.
