A RAW, bitingly cold but sunny day was made for keeping on the move and Kendal certainly did that with a six-try 46-10 demolition of Westoe at Mint Bridge on Saturday.
Skipper Ian Voortman led from the front and the years peeled away as he etched two stylish tries straight out of his pomp.
Yet after 12 minutes, home supporters were not confident at all - Westoe having scored all their pointsof the afternoon in a snappy, opening spell that suggested this could be a tight contest.
But the missed Kendal tackles that led to the early converted try and then a penalty were forgotten by half time as Kendal has reasserted and built up a 24-10 advantage.
That vrooming brace of tries for Voortman in the 13th and the 38th minutes were split by an unexpected penalty-try award from referee Mark Lidell, and with full back Mark Ireland unerring with his kicking, Kendal were in the driving seat at the interval.
From then on Kendal continued to put together a very confident, impressive display as the forwards bossed the weakened visitors in the setpieces and the loose and a well-deserved Rob Aloe touchdown secured a rare winning bonus-point after 66 minutes.
Scrum-half James Gough burrowed over for a try from close range five minutes from the end and there was time for the springy fresh legs of replacement flanker Gary Holmes to get a airing as he bullied his way through a dispirited defence from the side of a scrum.
Great work was done by Nick 'Noodles' McKain and the rest of the forwards to wrest control back from the visitors, while fly-half Mike Scott showed plenty of variety to keep Westoe on the back foot and Chris Park caught the eye with some solid work in defence and attack when brought in on the at wing.
Referee Liddell blew up a few seconds early when a Westoe player lay prone, knocked out cold by a ball in the face, and the Kendal supporters were able to go away to their firesides, happy having seen a first win in 2010 gained with zest and aplomb.
