Foster nets to seal 1-0 victory for Kendal Town

UniBond Premier Division Kendal Town 1 Boston United 0 VETERAN striker Dave Foster scored a vital goal as Kendal Town got back to winning ways against in-form Boston United The visitors had the better of the chances but Foster’s clinical finish in the 34th minute helped Town record a 1-0 win in their first home match since December 5.

Lee Ashcroft’s men were much improved from a disappointing display at Burscough last weekend and could have taken an early lead when Glenn Steel’s goalbound shot from a Kieran Walsmley corner was cleared off the line.

Boston got into the match after ten minutes and had several chances to take the lead through Spencer Weir-Daley and Mikel Suarez.

David Newnes pulled off a couple of fine saves before a Shaun Pearson effort struck the crossbar, only for Weir-Daley to blast over it.

The deadlock was broken though when, against the run of play, Foster latched onto a through ball from Carl Osman to slot home from five yards.

Gary Stopforth went on a strong run, passed two midfielders and whipped the in to Osman in the box.

Osman flicked to Ian Kilford whose deflected shot fell for Osman to feed Foster for the winner.

Suarez had the chance to level before half-time but his shot was deflected out for a corner, which was cleared by the Town defence.

Boston’s onslaught began in the second-half as the game became scrappy but a solid performance by a rejigged side which saw James Connolly debutise in the heart of the defence kept the Pilgrims at bay, Suarez had chance after chance, but each went begging, much to the delight of the onlooking Town faithful.

Newnes put in a sterling display and pulled off a string of fine saves, while Paul Byrne got his head to a Suarez shot to clear off the line on 59 minutes.

Minutes later Boston thought they had equalised when the ball appeared to cross the line, but the referee waved play on as Glenn Steel swiped the ball away.

Alex Taylor could have sealed the win on 86 minutes when Mulvaney crossed from the right wing but his shot was saved.

And it could have proved costly when Darren Sleath’s 92nd minute header was looping for the top corner, but a fantastic stretch by Newnes prevented the equaliser and secured three points for the black and whites.
