KENDAL Town have an intriguing week ahead with the visit of Lancaster City on Tuesday evening in the Unibond Challenge Cup a real crowd-puller.
Town showed the grit and determination required to mount a promotion push on Saturday as they saw off the challenge of rivals Boston United to maintain an unbeaten home record.
Surviving several goal-line clearances and showing a desire to win every ball at the back, Town edged the six-pointer 1-0.
Having put themselves back in the promotion picture, Town were denied a trip to Marine in midweek because of a waterloggedd pitch and they must travel to strugglers Matlock Town on Saturday in the league before the showdown with Tony Hesketh’s Lancaster City on Tuesday.
Such is the rivalry between the local clubs - with managers and players moving between them - that a massive attendance is expected.
First Division Lancaster City are sitting top of the three after winning an impressive 18 from 21 games this season.
Although City lost 4-1 to Woodley Sport at the weekend, they will go into the cup match with confidence after winning 15 league games on the bounce and disposing of UniBond Premier Division Ashton United 2-0 at Giant Axe last week in the fourth round.
Returning Hesketh steered Town to Premier Division promotion before he stepped down and Ashcroft was appointed as player-manager.
Another familiar face, Jordon Connerton, an ex-Town player who has already notched 29 up front for the Dolly Blues.
Alongside Connerton, City may also have Adam Farrell in the team and with 43 goals between the duo this season, the Town defence will have a tough test on Tuesday evening.
