HOCKEY: Kendal Ladies see off Wellingborough threat to reach national semi-finals


England Knockout Trophy, Quarter-final Kendal Ladies 3 Wellingborough Ladies 2 KENDAL Ladies reached the semi-finals of the England Knockout Trophy as they edged a tight semi-final against Wellingborough Ladies at Queen Katherine School, Kendal.

Kendal have been lucky with home ties in the competition and made a good start, with many chances saved, but it was goalless at half-time.

In the second half though Nicola Martindale battled through the defence and the Kendal captain put away a superbly timed reserve stick pass.

Nicola Conway nabbed the second to put Kendal in commaned when she converted a great ball from the right wing from Kirsty Hayton who had rounded the visiting defence with ease.

Wellingborough hit back though with two quick goals and the game seemed to be heading for a draw.

But Conway had other ideas and with 30 seconds to go, Kendal drove forward.

Conway fired the winner into the top of the net following good interchange play with Martindale.

The semi-final will be held on March 28, but the opposition is not yet known.

Northern Women’s Hockey League Division One Wakefield Ladies 2 Kendal Ladies 2.

Kendal found themselves 2-0 down at half time as Wakefield stormed into an early lead with a short corner and chipped shot, but Nicola Conway salvaged a draw.

With the visitors creating most of the play in the second half Conway reduced arrears after a Kirsty Hayton drive down the right wing.

Conway carefully poked home Hayton’s cross and soon after made it 2-2.

A one-two with Vicky Jones finished with Conway sending the ball past the Wakefield keeper.

Two Kendal players were later sin binned but they held on for the draw and lie fifth in the league.
