Hayton's View - We lacked a Howitzer or two against Hull

9:39am Friday 12th March 2010

KENDAL'S Director of Rugby Chris Hayton offers his weekly view.

TEVITA’S tanks trundled on at Mint Bridge on Saturday and we were short of a Howitzer or two to stop them.

Tevita Vaikona’s Hull team are a big unit, well drilled and with a pack that worked with military precision, attacking our lineouts and laying siege to our scrums.

It was easy to see how they have marched from the bottom three in October to the top half at present.

We were outgunned and only a rearguard last 20 minutes’ fight restored some pride to the afternoon’s proceedings.

There will be little comfort this week with the visit to Caldy, who only two weeks ago beat Hull and on Saturday completed a Humber double by beating Hull Ionians 41-25 in their own back yard.

Fly-half Richard Vasey is the league’s third highest points scorer and will command a powerful pack with Arnold in the second row and Nugent at No8 being the main power source.

With 14 bonus points to date they are real title contenders, just four points behind second-placed Macclesfield, and with all to play for.

Our tactics will be to cut off their fuel lines of ball possession and snipe at their flanks using Goughie and our forward ball carriers.

With Billy Coxon returning to our armoury maybe we can just pull off another Bannockburn-type victory against the odds.
