Rugby - Nine-try pummelling for Kendal on the Wirral

A NINE-try 61-6 shocker at the hands of upwardly mobile Caldy on the Wirral will give Kendal pause for thought as their National League 2 North campaign moves into its closing sequence.

Kendal actually got the first points on the board with a Mike Scott drop goal and then a Mark Ireland penalty made it look competitive in the opening 20 minutes after Caldy had split the kicks with their opening try.

It was an unanswered deluge of points afterwards with Caldy going on to run in five first-half tries, all converted for a 35-6 chasm at the interval. The second half tries - four of them - were bunched together in braces of five and two minutes which made more a mess of the scoreline than the visitors' efforts deserved.

Admittedly, Caldy are going places and lie third in the table while Kendal must hope to try to keep the 10-point gap between them and a bank of four teams at the foot of the table.
