Football –Mayers destroys Rocester

Kendal Town 5, Rocester 1.

Magnificent Kenny Mayers slammed in four quality goals as he enhanced his own status as one of the league's deadliest strikers and propelled Kendal Town into the upper echelons of the UniBond Premier League.

Initially it looked as if bottom of the table Rocester would give Town more trouble than anticipated, but once Mayers had struck in the 44th minute with a looping 20-yarder into the top right hand corner Kendal began to play with the attacking verve which has served them so well this season.

Three minutes into the second half David Foster was tripped as he burst into the Rocester area and Lee Ashcroft side-footed in the penalty, sending the keeper the wrong way.

After that it was the Mayers show. In the 63rd minute a long ball out of defence was nodded on by Foster and Mayers netted a hard low shot.

Nine minutes later Russ McKenna swept a head high cross into the heart of the Rocester penalty area and there was Mayers to head firmly in.

Town then had a double blip as clumsy tackles gave away two penalties in three minutes. Richard Mitchell sent Mark Thornley the wrong was to net the first, but the keeper then guessed right and made a magnificent full-length save from Mitchell's second spot kick.

Right on 90 minutes substitute Michael Jack was the supplier for Mayers to rocket in an unstoppable fourth.
