Cricket: Pro may miss start

NETHERFIELD's new professional, South African all-rounder Pierre de Bruyn, looks set to miss the first fixture of the Northern League season as he is selected to play for his club The Titans in the 20/20 competition which ends their season.

A similar occurrence h appened to Netherfield's last pro Dale Benkenstein - now at Durham.

Netherfield host Bolden from the North-East, weather permitting, for a friendly on Saturday and entertain Cleator on Sunday (1.30pm starts) ahead of the opening league match at home to Barrow on April 16.

A new addition to the squad is Gareth White's cousin Nick, a left-arm spinner, who is at university in Leeds and will be working in Ambleside from June.

THE INSTALLATION of a new sightscreen, repairs and cleaning to seats, removal of two fallen trees and a general tidy-up were all activities as part of a 'Cricket Force' weekend at Kendal CC.

'Cricket Force' is part of an England and Wales Cricket Board initiative and was backed at Kendal by A Plant, Travis Perkins and Northern Power Tools, who provided materials and equipment.

More than 20 people joined the pre-season tidy-up - more than ever before.

Because of the uneven number of Northern League clubs, Kendal have a bye on the season's opening day, but have arranged a friendly the following day, Sunday, April 17, at home to Sedbergh School First XI ahead of their first league fixture at home to Leyland Motors on Saturday, April 23.

THE Westmorland League season is set to start on Saturday, April 23 - watch out for a special Gazette preview from John Glaister.
