THE Tour of Britain cycle race (almost a mini version of the Tour De France) will be racing through Shap, Kendal and Kirkby Lonsdale next Wednesday (August 31) as its second stage heads from Carlisle to Blackpool. Estimated arrival times en route are Shap village (11.55am), Shap summit 12.10pm, Shap Road, Kendal, 12.30pm and Kirkby Lonsdale 1pm.
Rugby celebrations...
ONE hundred years of rugby at Kendal will be celebrated on Sunday (2pm) with a re-creation at Mint Bridge of the club's first ever match, a fixture against Vale of Lune. Under-16 and second team games will also feature in the day of celebration.
FA Cup openers...
FA CUP action starts for Kendal Town this weekend as they travel to Northern League side Horden Colliery Welfare for a preliminary round match. On Monday (Aug 29), Town are at Parkside for their UniBond League First Division match with Warrington Town.
Cricket crunch match...
Westmorland League cricket sees a crunch match when First Division leaders Windermere entertain second-placed Warton on Saturday (2pm) then on Sunday Milnthorpe take on Warton in the final of the Over Sands Travel First Division Cup.
Grasmere Sports...
ONE of the biggest events on the Cumbrian calendar, Grasmere Lakeland Sports and Show, takes place on Sunday (Aug 28). The programme of events includes Cumberland and Westmorland wrestling, fell racing, hound trails, gymnastics display and tug-o-war. There will also be numerous stalls, attractions and children's entertainment.

HAVE a flutter on the horses at Cartmel Races which runs from tomorrow (Saturday) until Monday (Aug 29).
