Town press ahead with stand plan

KENDAL Town FC are keen on pushing ahead with plans for a new stand at the Planet Conservatories Stadium with the impetus of their promotion to the Premier Division of the Unibond League behind them.

Town secretary Craig Campbell had on-site meetings this week with developers to confirm the details of at least one new stand, with the hope that the funding can be agreed and work started before Christmas, Mr Campbell said: "We would like to see a new stand opposite the current one which would go box-to-box with 500 seats, but if we can't do that then at least one where the current terracing is of about 300 seats."

He said that all being well the club would apply for planning permission and make a funding application to the Football Foundation to place before its August meeting, with the club committed to raise 40 or 50 per cent of the cost itself.

Meanwhile, the dressing-rooms area is to be refurbished, he revealed, after tiling work last year and supporters are to be invited to a "work day" at the ground at a date in June to help with a general tidy-up and painting work, with a barbeque and refreshments supplied.

Town have been encouraged by approaches from potential new sponsors in the wake of their promotion and are looking into extending their commercial activity, he added.

Meanwhile, Town's hero of the hour Peter Smith was not resting on his laurels and played for the Euxton Villa team, along with ex-Town striker Kenny Mayers, that won the Umbros Over-35 Cup final by beating opponents from Middlesex 8-3 in the final at West Brom's Hawthorns ground.

Town heard this week that Cumbria County Council was to offer them a civic reception at its Kendal offices.

The players were due ot have their annual night out in Newcastle this week before the club's annual presentation on the Windermere steamer Swan on Saturday, May 27 (supporters can join them - contact the secretary on Kendal 740636).

Manager Tony Hesketh said "After the awards night we will look to do some deals with players but other clubs have shown interest and it is no secret that we will do well to hang on to some of them."

n Morecambe sacked manager Jim Harvey this week after their Football League prom-otion play-off failure.
