Rugby - Kendal kick off with tough mission against Hull

THE WAITING is over and Kendal RUFC open their new National League North 2 season at home to Hull on Saturday.

To wind up preparation, the Black and Ambers headed to the Dale to take on Wharfedale i the Peter Kremer Trophy hame last Saturday.

It ended with a 42-6 scoreline in the Green’s favour, but Kendal trailed only 10-6 at half time and after giving a run-out to most of their big squad, they not surprisingly faded towards the end and the points built up.

Kendal coach Ian Voortman said: "There were a few aspects hanging over from last year that we unhappy such as the one-to-one tackling that cost us a few tries.

"But we were a game short going into face a good side like Wharfedale, who were a bit ahead of us in their pre-season build-up.

"We took a large squad and used a lot of substitutions and leaked two or three tries when we should have been pushing on.

"We’ll be using a smaller squad in the league and not rotating people as much which will help.

Voortman added: "The positives were new fly-half Kyle Peyper at fly-half who shows he offers a lot of length with his boot in the position, something we have not had in the past.

"There was promising work through the centre channel, our scramble defence was good and so was our continuity.

"The important thing is that we have shaken off the rustiness and more or less everyone had a 60-minute run-out."

"Hull will be a different challenge to Wharfedale.

There are a lot more forward-orientated and are good in the 22, especially finishing out lineout drives, but we wil try to stretch them as they are experienced but a bit older and we will want to speed up the game."

"Overall we looked in good shape and are looking forward to a home game to start to the season and getting a good crowd down and showing the new guys what the Kendal experience is all about. "

They have at least three ex-Premiership players in their pack and they are a big, experienced and streetwise side.

So its important that we play at speed and get the ball out wide to ensure we keep it waway from theose tight phases where their strength lies.

We are going to be more ambitious this seaso nand play a a more crteative, attacking rugby.

"At the end of last season we seemed to be going throug hthe motions and it all looked a bit of a chore.

We want to put smiles back on players' faces and go out there and show flair and ability.

It's been difficult in selection and there are lots of guys who have prepared very well, but we are been able to give everyone a game.

But we have got another 29 league games and everyone will get a chance at some stage.

"It's important to keep involved and for them to go on and prove themselves in the second side.
