Football - Successful Chase for points courtesy of McGahon

KENDAL Town bounced back from their disappointing Bank Holiday Monday home defeat with a gritty 1-0 victory at Chasetown on Saturday.

Full debutant Danny McGahon produced the decisive goal at the start of the second half when he steered home following a typical Danny Wisdom darting run down the left flank.

Boss Lee Ashcroft had demanded more from his players in the wake of the Burscough defeat and the response was an encouraging one as striker Alex Taylor almost fired his side into a sixth-minute lead.

Danny Rowe’s defence-splitting pass found Wisdom, who cut the ball back perfectly for Taylor but his touch let him down as he looked to round home keeper Ryan Price.

Three minutes later Taylor, last season’s top scorer, was again unfortunate as his low shot struck the foot of the post.

And as the football begun to flow the hosts played their part with Gary Birch blazing wide of goal and full back Mark Branch going closer with a free kick which dipped onto the crossbar.

Kendal edged it towards the end of the half as two identical goal-scoring opportunities fell to captain Glenn Steel, but both his headed efforts were blocked by Price.

Taylor was a withdrawal at the start of the second half, being replaced by David Foster and it was just moments after the enforced change that Kendal got the breakthrough.

Wisdom, who had been tormenting the home right back all afternoon, once again got the better of him and, after cutting inside, rode two challenges before slipping the ball into the path of McGahon who finished well The injuries continued to mount for Kendal as Rowe limped off to be replaced by Aaron Taylor, who in turn had to be replaced by remaining sub Georg Melling after twisting an ankle.

To add to the worries both Kieran Walmsley and captain Steel saw out the game carrying heavy knocks as Kendal’s walking wounded found themselves stretched to the limit.

Carl Osman might have settled the nerves when he skipped away from the home defence on 90 minutes only to fire into the side netting.

A full eight minutes of added time followed and Kendal keeper David Newnes pulled off two accomplished saves from Birch before the whistle eventually signalled the end of the game.
