Elusive goals will arrive, says Hesketh

A SCARCITY of goals in the pre-season build-up is "concerning" Tony Hesketh, but the Kendal Town boss is at pains to explain that his expected strikeforce of Lee Ashcroft and David Foster have featured only lightly so far.

Foster, a teacher at Queen Eliz-abeth School in Kirkby Lonsdale, scored for Town in the 2-1 defeat against Carlisle United but is away on a school trip, while Ashcroft has been recovering from surgery to alleviate groin trouble and only made a belated comeback this week against Morecambe.

"If you takes those two out of the equation that's about 40 goals a season and I'm sure everything will come together in time for the start of the season after being in this business for over 20 years," he said.

Town's other two goals came from an Ian Kilford penalty and stand-in Peter Nicholls in a 2-1 win over Preston.

Meanwhile, Hesketh said left-back Craig Redhead, who damaged an ankle against Morecambe, had been for X-rays and had suspected ligament damage which would prevent him making the season's start "Craig has done well in the friendlies and cemented that left-back spot for himself, but the injury means we may have to look at other options."

Of the Morecambe match, he said: "Again I was pleased with what I saw. We have not worked on the tactical aspect of play much at all yet.

"That is still to come in the next fortnight, but I can promise supporters we will be a force to be reckoned with."

Hesketh said the club was "in negotiations" with Ross Baxter, the 24-year-old goalkeeper from Colne who made his debut on Tuesday, while he also had hopes of two new captures before the season's start.

Town, who sent a young side for a run-out against Trimpell on Saturday and lost 3-0, go to Lancaster on Saturday, with the first league game at home to Radcliffe Borough on August 19.
