Football - Staveley eye Senior Cup prize

STAVELEY United completed the Senior Cup semi-final line-up by beating Shap 5-2 at the Ayland Recreation Ground on Saturday.

United started better and took the lead after five minutes when Lloyd Trippitt headed home at the back post, but Shap levelled against the run of play.

Jimmy Ellwood made it 2-1 before the break with a good strike to the top corner from distance, only for Shap to equalise for a second time after a slip up in defence.

But United pressed and further goals from Ellwood, Scott O’Sullivan and Martin O’Sullivan set up a clash at Corinthians on March 19.

In the other semi-final Kirkoswald host Wetheriggs United.

Division One Endmoor KGR climbed to fourth in Division One with a 7-1 win at Burneside on Saturday.

A Craig Blakey brace and goals from Shane Lambert and Sean Atkinson gave Endmoor a 4-0 half-time lead.

Further goals from Peter Carradus, Sean Atkinson and Scott O’Callaghan ensured victory before Joe Stansfield scored a late consolation for Burneside, who remain second bottom.

Wetheriggs moved top of the league with a 1-0 win against Penrith Rangers while Kirkoswald were held to a 3-3 draw against Appleby.

Ross Cowperthwaite put Kirkoswald ahead before two goals from Thomas Armstrong turned the game in Appleby’s favour.

Ross Kaminski levelled before a second Cowperthwaite goal put the hosts back in front.

Armstrong secured a draw for Appleby with ten minutes to go as he fired home for a hat-trick.

Elsewhere Keswick defeated Carvetii United 6-1.

Mason and Freeman Cup In DivisionTwo the Mason and Freeman Cup saw two thrilling ties decided on penalties.

Ibis edged past Lunesdale United 6-5 on penalties after a 3-3 extra-time draw.

Paul Dixon put Ibis ahead on 15 minutes after latching onto a through ball but Lunesdale levelled to send the tie to extra-time.

Five minutes into the first period, Dixon conceded a penalty and was sent off, while Lunesdale scored from the spot,and swiftly added another goal to go 3-1 up.

But with five minutes to go a visiting defender headed into his own net before Stephen Longcake forced penalties.

Coniston reached the semi-finals 5-4 also on penalties over Alston Moor SC, having trailed 3-0 at half time.

The hosts rallied in the second half with goals from Dave Cooper (2) and Phil Edmondson.

With the scores at 4-4 after penalties Andrew Wayne slotted his sudden-death strike home and when Alston’s taker blasted over the bar, Coniston progressed.

Second-placed Kendal United pulled back a two-goal deficit to overcome Windermere SC.

Goals from Rudi Colman and Richard Towers put Mere in command, but United levelled the score before half time, Martin Willan supplying both goals.

From the restart United took the lead with a Greg Pearce goal and it became 4-2 when Daniel Postlethwaite fired home.

Mere were given hope when Towers bagged his second, but were caught on the counter.

Joseph Webster sealed the tie at 5-3 when he cut inside his marker and put a 20-yard lob over the keeper.

Completing the semi-final line-up are Wetheriggs United Reserves, who defeated Penrith Rangers Reserves 3-0.
