A PENALTY shootout was required for Cartmel Reserves to progress in the Fisher/Howson Remembrance Cup on Saturday.
Cartmel had trailed to a first-half strike from Galgate Reserves centre-back Robert Rhodes, but came back into the first-round tie with an equaliser with five minutes remaining.
Cartmel centre-back Alastair Daggett ventured forward to score a well-deserved goal that levelled the scores.
Neither side could convert their chances in extra time but Cartmel edged the penalty shootout 4-3.
It sets up a home third-round tie with Carnforth Rangers Reserves this week.
Bentham Reserves bowed out of the Remembrance Cup, losing 3-1 at Highgrove Reserves with Danny Ellershaw putting them on the scoresheet.
Bentham’s Premier Division team had an important 3-2 victory over Galgate.
Both sides were keen for points to move away from a possible relegation fight with James Earnshaw bagging a last-minute winner after Daniel Jackson and Oliver Harrison were also on target.
Swarthmoor beat Freehold 2-1 for the second week running as the two drop-zone rivals did battle. Goal pocher Graham Wilcox supplemented Martin Bowd’s strike for Moor, but they suffered a blow when their best defender went off with a recurrence of a cruciate ligament injury.
Third-placed Arnside travelled to Kirkby Lonsdale in the Division 1 match of the day.
The result was in doubt up to the final whistle, Arnside winning by 3-2 after James Thornton (2) and David Parsons had scored for them. Kirkby Lonsdale replied with both goals with both goals from Andy Metcalfe.
Ingleton Resereves went down 4-1 at home to College Reserves with a Ben O’Hagen goal as consolation and Bolton-le-Sands also crashed 4-1 to Millhead, with Tom Forest their scorer.
Division 2 leaders Grange fell behind to relegation-threatened Allithwaite in their derby with long-serving Michael Wood scoring a good goal.
Grange slowly got into the game and replied with a Ryan McKenny goal on the stroke of half time.
Improving after the break, Grange snatched the winner through Dave Robinson with 10 minutes left although Alithwaite pushed them hard on the greasy pitch.
In the Divison 3 cup, Burton Thistle were disappointed in their bid to reach the final of the FWPC Cup when edged out by veterans Morecambe Gold, who had a clinical finish from John Eccles to thank for a 1-0 victory, setting up a showpiece meeting with Villa Royale.
League newcomers Lancaster Rovers won the Baines-Bagguley team of the month for February.
Rovers were one of four teams to win all of their four games in the month. The others were Marsh United, Swarthmoor Social Club and Arnside.
