Angling - Four-way duel for Winter League honours

TEN anglers fished the re-arranged December Winter League match at Manor Farm, Garstang on Sunday.

For a change conditions were excellent and all anglers caught.

Mike Harrison was 1st with 20lb 10oz, Nick Butterfield was second with 13lb 8oz and Tony Ryan third with 10lb 10oz.

Winning tactics were pole fished maggot over pellet accounting for a mixed bag of skimmers, carp and roach.

The next and last Winter League match is on Sunday, March 13 at Cleveley Bridge.

Competition should be intense as four anglers can take the top spot.

Rainbow stillwaters have been stocked but if you are not catching, keep on the move as the fish tend to shoal up at this time of the year.

Good News from Farletonview : it is now fully open following weed removal and restocking. Some good catches have bee recorded, including Pete Bramwell with around 40 rainbow trout on black and green minkies and John Morris 11 on green fritz.

This fishery will now be closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Across at Wych Elm the best recent catches of rainbows have fallen to cat’s whiskers with Norman Bennett taking 8 and bloodworm patterns with Raymond Harwood 7 and Geoff Waites 6.

Anglers at Bigland have also been among the rainbows despite the often cold wind : Charlie Parkinson7 and 5 over two visits on dawson’s olive ; Steve Johnson 5 on black & white mini-lures and L and G Knipe 11 between them on bloodworm patterns.

High Newton and Ghyll Head are also ready for action.

TOP TIP As water temperatures are very cold fish deep and slow : long leaders with a weighted pattern on the point for nymphs and buzzers ; intermediate or even slow sinking lines for lures.
