AFTER struggling to find their finishing touch lately in the West Lancs League, it all came together for Milnthorpe Corinthians with a 5-0 home victory over Furness Cavaliers on Saturday.
The overdue goals are a welcome omen as as April brings Keith Singleton’s side a chance of two trophies in knockout competitions.
Cors raced into a 3-0 lead inside quarter of an hour, leaving Cavaliers with an uphill battle to get back into the contest.
After only two minutes Adam Garnett’s through ball reached Neil Hartley and he drilled a well-placed shot into the bottom corner.
It was 2-0 to Cors with five minutes gone when Stef Postlethwaite found Dan Davidson with a telling ball and he ran on and again and steered his shot beyond the Cavaliers keeper into the corner.
Cors’ change in fortune was summed up when Postlethwaite saw a shot palmed away only for Hartley to slide in at the back post to net and make it 3-0.
It was a smiliar story after half time with Cors’ other two goals arriving in the opening eight minutes.
The fourth, and the goal of the game, came from a free kick on the right which Paul Gibson sent over for Postlethwaite to produce a stunning power header from just beyond the penalty spot.
Davidson completed the scoring when he burst from deep and went one-on-one with the keeper to slot home.
It was good to see striker Adam Pashley come off the subs’ bench for his second match back after suffering a broken leg last season.
Cors boss Keith Singleton said: “It’s weird how it happens in games.
“We have been unable to take our chances lately then suddenly we are 3-0 up in double-quick time.
“As well as the Westmorland Senior Cup final, we have our League Cup semi-final coming up soon on April 9 when we face Lytham on a neutral ground at Nrocross, so there’s plenty happening.”
There’s an Old Boys Reunion day at Corinthians this Saturday when former players are invited along to meet up.
Ambleside United’s Mike Barron is relishing a striking partnership with Zach Clark in a rejigged attack.
He scored twice in the 5-1 win over Walney Island on Saturday.
It was a win that keep Ambleside in the promotion hunt, though manager Ste Edmondson says realistically they need Furness Rovers to drop a few points in the run-in.
Ambleside’s first goal did not arrive until 25 minutes when Barron beat a man and fired past the keeper from 18 yards.
Barron made it 2-0 with a shot from the edge of the box and Clark hit the third when he fastened on to Craig Edmondson’s long ball and lobbed the keeper from 18 yards.
Clark converted Matt Parkinson’s pull-back for the fourth and Tom Routledge hit number five when he lobbed the keeper after a neat one-two.
Only then did Walnsey get on the scoresheet.
Kendal County had a free weekend.
