Hockey: Kendal Ladies face anxious wait in promotion bid

KENDAL Ladies will be hoping for a close match when Preston face City of York on Saturday as a second-placed finish will see them promoted to the Premier Division.

Kendalm, who sit second in the league, ended their campaign with a 7-4 defeat at Preston on Saturday, leaving them three points ahead of their rivals, who will finish the season this weekend.

But for Preston to overhaul Kendal, a 10-goal victory over York is required with Kendal poised for promotion otherwise.

At the weekend Preston stormed into a 4-1 half time lead, with Nicola Conway getting Kendal’s goal from a penalty corner, and despite further goals from Conway, Sophie Garne and Laura Morris, Preston took the win by adding three of their own for a 7-4 win.

As well as the crunch promotion decider this weekend, Kendal will hold a coffee morning at Kendal Town Hall between 9.30am-12.30pm to boost club funds.

Division 2 West Ulverston 0 Kirkby Stephen 5 Ulverston welcomed Kirkby for the last game of this season and as with most matches this year, the hosts had to work hard to create some positive moves forward.

Tireless running from Niki Satterthwaite and Helene Burrow, the formidable tackling of Carolyn Metcalfe and a superb glove save from Stef Sykes in the first half helped Ulverston see the half out scoreless.

But Kirkby pressure told and some clinical finishing saw them bag five goals in the second half.

Men’s Hockey Windermere play in the County Cup at Carlisle on Saturday. This year's competition is over two weekends so Kendal, GSK (Glaxo), Keswick and West Cumbria and Carlisle play two games each this Saturday and again on April 16. The draw for the competition is yet to be made.

* Windermere 2s finished their Sunday Association campaign with a 4-1 win over Keswick and West Cumbria 4s at Cockermouth. Mere scorers were Ben Clay, Steve Gibson, Richie Jackson and Harry Jackson.
