WORLD Cup batsman Jamie How misses Kendal’s opening-day game against Morecambe in the Furness Building Society Northern Premier League on Saturday.
Instead Kendal have found a temporary replacement in- South African Werner Coetsee, who has played for provincial sides Lions and North West.
A right-hand bat, right-arm off break bowler, he was the professional at Morecambe in 2007 and will play for Lancashire League outfit Enfield this year.
At the age of 22, Kendal’s new skipper Chris Miller may be the youngest in Northern League history, taking over from Ross McMillan who had three consecutive seasons at Shap Road.
Off-spinner Miller took 60 league wickets, second only in the amateur lists to Lancaster’s Ben Simm.
Fellow bowler Stu Parkin will be the Kendal vice-captain.
Miller said: “Signing Jamie put down a marker and will hopefully raise the profile of the club in the local community - we also want to attract players who are keen to come and play alongside him.”
New opener Jonathan Miles, another Cumberland regular from Barrow, switches to Shap Road after breaking the club’s amateur batting record last season with 878 runs at 46.21.
Kendal have said farewell to all-rounder Kevin Howarth, who has retired after 10 years with the club.
But Kendal’s evergreen legend Terry Hunte is set to return, 24 seasons on from having made his debut back in 1987 and the league’s record-breaker Kendal have signed Jamie Heywood, from Lancaster.
However, he will miss the season as he recovers from serious head injuries suffered at work.
