Cricket - Preston skipper's all-round effort trumps Miller's 7-41

KENDAL were left to salvage a draw in the FBS Northern Cricket League as their last pair defied the Preston attack at the close of play at Shap Road on Saturday.

Earlier, Kendal skipper Chris Miller reaped 7-41 in another excellent display of spin bowling to rein in Preston's run charge in the 49-overs a side match.

Presotn skipper Luckman Vahaluwala made 46 out with opening partner Sajid Patel (24), Mohsin Modhi (34) and pro Saeed Bariwala (32) all contributing until the last eight wickets fell for 26 as Miller dominated.

But in-form Vahaluwala also had a say when Kendal batted, taking 4-18 from 17 overs as Kendal declined to 121-9, with Kiwi professional Jamie How faring best for 32.

The final pair of deputy wicketkeeper Paul Dowker and veteran Adrian Potts saw out the last 16 balls to prevent defeat.

Netherfield were knocked off top spot by St Annes after the Parksiders lost at Morecambe. Their porfessional Brady Barends failed to show ater another glitch in the saga of his efforts to get here from South Africa.

Compatriot Ockert Erasmus, professional for East Lancashire CC was called upon but he finished without a wicket as Morecambe set a target of 179 for eight.

Professional Anwar Ali hammered 58 off 80 balls and Chris Williams made 35. Stuart Nixon and John Mason each took three wickets for the visitors.

Anwar Ali removed Netherfield openers Marc Brown and captain Chris Parry as he and Jono Gates took four wickets.

Erasmus delayed Morecambe's victory charge with an unbeaten 71 off 82 balls but Alex Atkinson was next top scorer with 12 as Netherfield subsided to 131 all out.
